What if the future of the Church depends not just on who we preach to, but on who we welcome?
Throughout Scripture, we see that Jesus didn’t just preach to the crowds—He noticed the overlooked, welcomed the outcasts, and honored those whom society dismissed. In Mark 10:14, He gives a powerful rebuke to His own disciples:
“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”
But what happens when we, like the disciples, unintentionally push children aside in our ministry efforts?
That’s exactly what a group of church leaders in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) realized during a recent training session.
A Divine Lesson in the Value of Children
These leaders were preparing for an important mission trip to a remote area where many were coming to Christ. They were eager to plant churches and disciple new believers, but they recognized a major gap—there was no ministry specifically for women and children.
They knew this was important, but they hadn’t considered how their own attitudes toward children might be shaping the church’s future.
That changed when an MAI trainer came to facilitate a lesson on “The Value of Children in the Scriptures.” Before the session even began, one of her colleagues led a devotional—on the very same passage—where Jesus welcomes and blesses the children. The timing was nothing short of divine.
As the lesson unfolded, the participants—mostly men, with only one woman in the group—began to see themselves in the story. They had been acting just like the disciples, unintentionally sidelining children rather than embracing them as an essential part of the Church.
A New Commitment to the Next Generation
By the end of the session, these leaders’ perspectives had completely shifted. What started as an academic lesson turned into a deeply personal realization—they needed to make changes.
They left with a renewed vision, committing to:
✅ Intentionally include children in their ministry efforts.
✅ Develop women’s and children’s programs in the new churches they were planting.
✅ See children not as distractions but as disciples.
While the long-term impact is still unfolding, the immediate response was powerful. These leaders, once unsure about how to engage with children’s ministry, are now determined to prioritize and invest in the next generation.

This moment of transformation didn’t happen by accident—it happened because someone invested in equipping these leaders with biblical truth. And this is just the beginning.
Jesus’ words in Matthew 25:40 remind us of our calling:
“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
