The Best Return on Investment Is People

This morning I was reflecting on Jesus’ conversation with the Sadducees in Matthew 22. They were focused on a hypothetical problem. Jesus redirected them to a much bigger reality: God’s kingdom extends beyond this life, and His purposes are far greater than we often imagine.

It made me think about leadership.

In a world that celebrates buildings, budgets, platforms, and quick results, it’s easy to measure success by what we create. But I’ve become increasingly convinced that the greatest return on investment is found somewhere else.

It’s found in people.

The leader who is equipped to serve their own community. The volunteer who discovers they can make a difference. The young person who is mentored. The family that gains hope. The local church that is empowered to become a catalyst for lasting change.

Those investments don’t just solve today’s problems—they multiply. They ripple through families, neighborhoods, and generations in ways we may never fully see.

This conviction has shaped how I think about community development. Sustainable change rarely comes from doing more for people. It comes from investing in people and recognizing the gifts, dignity, and God-given potential already present within every community.

That’s the kind of work worth giving your life to.

Because when we invest in people, we’re investing in something that lasts far longer than any program or project ever could.
